『blogmas』 Festival of Lights

At Potsdamer Platz

Back in October the Festival of Lights took place, like every year. It's a free festival where they show us different light installations on some of the most well known sights. Some of them tell stories, others are just a few creative designs.

I always like to walk around town and take a look at a few of these installations. I find it really interesting to see what you can do with light.

Brandenburg Gate
It takes a lot of time to see more than one sight and all the installations and shows displayed there. You really have to plan what you want to see and plan out a rout to follow. We started at Potsdamer Platz and from there we went to Brandenburg Gate, Hotel de Rome, Humboldt University, Berliner Dom, TV Tower at Alexanderplatz and the Stadthaus Berlin. This took us several hours, because most of the time we had to walk around, since most of the public transport couldn't get through the streets or it's just too crowded to get into the bus. So you really have to wear comfortable shoes and plan on walking a lot.

Hotel de Rome
Most of the time there are several different themes on the different sights, to which people created light shows, which will be shown one after the other. It's always interesting to see what they did and most of the time I enjoy most light shows.

Light designers from all over the world work on these light shows and get to present them on the festival. I think it's a nice idea to get new artists known and to take a different take on actual or historic topics.

It's always nice to see how interested a lot of people are in these light shows. Festival of Lights turned in a total tourist magnet and it's really popular nowadays. And there are a lot of different guided tours you can book to see everything in detail. Also they always have a special program point throughout the week which has something to do with the light shows and the topic the shows are under.

More infos about the past and upcoming Festival of Lights can be found here

Berliner Dom

Since a few years there is a special contest under a specific topic where different light artists are participating. This year the contest was presented at the Fernsehturm (TV Tower) at Alexanderplatz. Which is located really central in the city.  It was possible to vote for a winner during the week.

I filmed everything they showed there, because I always like to see all the different shows. You can see all of them in the video below. This year all light shows included sound as well, which was a special add on. For a few years now, the light shows are combined with sound, but not always.

The Stadthaus Berlin was the last presentation of light shows I saw this year. There were many more I wanted to see, but no more time left. Guess next year I have to visit a few different places than usual.

In the last video you can see a few more of the different light shows. Brandenburg Gate is always a really popular place and has mostly the most interesting light shows to show. Also another really popular place is the Berliner Dom.
